Merchant Descriptor

PaymentsUpdated 06 Nov 2026

A merchant descriptor is the short text, usually a trading name and sometimes a city, phone number or website, that identifies a business next to a charge on a cardholder's statement or banking app. It is another name for a billing descriptor, which explains static, soft and dynamic descriptors, character limits and network rules in full. Acquirers and processors tend to say "merchant descriptor", while merchants and support teams more often say "billing descriptor" or "statement descriptor".

The descriptor is configured on the merchant account and carried in the merchant name field of each transaction, alongside the merchant identification number (MID). Card network rules require it to be a name customers will recognise.

A vague or unfamiliar descriptor is a common cause of avoidable chargebacks and of friendly fraud claims, because cardholders dispute charges they do not recognise. The descriptor is a display label, not a legal identifier, so it can differ from the company's registered name.
