Rekt

Trading and SpeculationUpdated 05 Nov 2026

Rekt is an informal spelling of "wrecked" used in cryptocurrency communities to describe a trader or investor who has suffered a heavy, often total, loss. It is most often applied to people whose leveraged positions were closed by forced liquidation, but it also covers losses from collapsing tokens, hacks and scams. It is written in many forms, including "rekt", "REKT" and "get rekt".

The word came to crypto from gaming and meme culture and sits alongside slang such as bagholder, degen and bloodbath. It can be mocking, sympathetic or self-deprecating, depending on who says it. It has no technical or legal meaning.

01

Rekt in plain terms

Think of someone who bets their whole savings on a single horse race, borrowing extra money to bet even more. The horse stumbles, and they lose not only their own money but the borrowed money too.

In crypto, "rekt" describes that outcome. A trader took a big risk, the market moved the wrong way, and the position was wiped out.

02

Origin and spread

Dictionary.com lists "rekt" as a phonetic spelling of "wrecked" that emerged in the early 2010s, with senses ranging from "drunk" to "soundly defeated". Meme trackers date its earliest online dictionary definition to 2011 and record its spread through online gaming and then wider meme culture by 2014. Crypto traders adopted it in the same period, and it became standard vocabulary as leveraged crypto trading grew. A security news site, Rekt News, uses the word as its name for post-mortems of hacks and exploits in decentralized finance.

03

Common ways traders get rekt

  • High leverage. Trading perpetual futures with large leverage means a small price move can exhaust the margin and close the position.
  • Ignoring margin warnings. Failing to meet a margin call on a margin trading account leads to the same result.
  • Buying at the top. Chasing a rally driven by FOMO and holding as it reverses.
  • Scams and failures. Losing funds in a rug pull, a pump and dump scheme or an exchange collapse.
  • Security mistakes. Exposing a seed phrase or falling for a phishing link that drains a wallet.

What the term says about market psychology

The popularity of "rekt" shows how normal large losses are in speculative crypto trading, and how communities turn them into jokes. Posting a "rekt" screenshot can be a way of coping with a loss, and crowds often celebrate dramatic liquidations of whales on the other side of a trade. This can make extreme risk feel routine, which is why the word is closely tied to degen culture.

Regulators note that leveraged and margined crypto products can lose more than the trader's initial stake and that prices can move very sharply. Using less leverage, sizing positions to risk tolerance and setting a stop-loss order are the standard ways to avoid getting rekt, although none removes the risk entirely.
