Power Law

Economics Markets and Financial TheoryUpdated 05 Nov 2026

A power law is a relationship in which one quantity varies as a fixed power of another. In economics it describes data where a handful of cases are enormous and most are small, such as wealth, firm sizes, city populations or market crashes. The best-known example is the Pareto distribution, explained in full on that page.

Power-law data have fat tails: extreme events happen far more often than a normal distribution would predict, which matters for risk management.
