Money Remittance

Cross-Border and FX SystemsUpdated 05 Nov 2026

Money remittance is the service of taking funds from a sender and delivering them to a recipient, very often in another country, for example from a migrant worker to family at home. The phrase describes both the transfers themselves and the business of handling them. The flows, their size and their economic role are covered in the main entry on Remittances.

In European Union law, money remittance is one of the payment services listed in PSD2: the provider receives funds without opening a payment account for either party and transfers them to the payee or the payee's provider. In the United States the same activity is usually called money transmission, and the firm a money transmitter. Firms that specialise in it are also known as money transfer operators, while informal systems such as hawala do the same job outside licensed channels.
