ELI5 (Explain Like I'm Five)

Cryptocurrency and Digital AssetsUpdated 05 Nov 2026

ELI5 (Explain Like I'm Five) is internet shorthand for a request to explain a complicated subject in simple, everyday language, without jargon. Someone who writes "ELI5: how does mining work?" is not literally asking for a children's version; they want the core idea stated plainly enough for any adult newcomer to follow.

The abbreviation comes from r/explainlikeimfive, a Reddit community founded in 2011 that grew into one of the site's largest forums. In crypto, where terms such as smart contract, gas fee and seed phrase confuse many new users, ELI5 became a common way to ask for help and a common label on beginner explainers.

01

Explain Like I'm Five in plain terms

Think of a friend who is a mechanic. If you ask why your car makes a noise, a good friend will not recite the part numbers; they will say something like "the brakes are worn, so metal is rubbing on metal." That is an ELI5 answer: true, short, and built from things you already understand.

An ELI5 request is a polite way of saying "please give me that version first." The detail can come later, once the basic picture is clear.

02

Origin on Reddit

r/explainlikeimfive was created in 2011 and won Reddit's award for best new community that year. Its rules make clear that "like I'm five" means friendly, simplified explanations for laypeople, not answers written for actual small children. Moderators also discourage answers that are condescending or merely clever. The abbreviation spread from Reddit to forums, chat apps and news sites, alongside other Reddit coinages such as AMA.

How the crypto world uses ELI5

  • As a question. New users ask for ELI5 explanations of blockchain, proof of work, private keys or DeFi in forums and chat groups.
  • As a content format. Exchanges, wallets and educators publish ELI5 posts and threads explaining a new upgrade, a hash function or why a coin has a fixed supply.
  • As a pitch tool. Project teams describe their token in "ELI5" terms in an AMA or on social media, sometimes simplifying away the risks along with the jargon.

Simple explanations matter in crypto because mistakes are costly. A user who does not understand that losing a seed phrase can mean losing the funds, or that a transaction cannot be reversed, is easy prey for scams such as address poisoning.

04

Limits of oversimplifying

An ELI5 explanation trades precision for clarity, and that trade can mislead. Analogies such as "bitcoin is digital gold" or "a smart contract is a vending machine" capture one feature and hide others, such as volatility, software bugs or the role of oracles. Promoters can also use a friendly ELI5 tone to make an unproven product sound simple and safe, the soft-sell cousin of shilling and of banksplaining in traditional finance.

A good ELI5 answer is a starting point, not a verdict. Readers should follow it with the full explanation, the project's whitepaper and the advice to do your own research. Terms that confuse newcomers, such as satoshis or tokenomics, are often best understood by starting simple and then reading the detail.
