Current Deposits

Banking and Financial InstitutionsUpdated 05 Nov 2026

Current deposits are the balances that customers keep in current accounts, the everyday bank accounts used for payments, salaries and bills. They are repayable on demand, so the holder can withdraw them at any time without notice, and they usually earn little or no interest. In the United States the same money is held in a checking account and counted among demand deposits; the full account is described on the Current Account page.

Central banks and banking statistics use "current deposits" as one category of bank deposits, alongside savings deposits, fixed deposits and call deposits. The State Bank of Pakistan, for example, reports deposits of scheduled banks broken down in this way. Because current deposits can be spent immediately, they are part of narrow measures of the money supply as well as broad money (M2).
