BUIDL

Cryptocurrency and Digital AssetsUpdated 05 Nov 2026

BUIDL is an informal, deliberately misspelled version of "build" used in cryptocurrency and Web3 communities. It is a call to spend time and money developing useful software, products and infrastructure instead of focusing only on token prices. Developers, founders and investors use it as a motto, a hashtag and the name of hackathons and grant programmes.

The word is modelled on HODL, the misspelling of "hold" that became crypto slang in 2013, and it is often presented as its constructive counterpart: holding coins is passive, building is active. It has no regulatory meaning. It should not be confused with BUIDL, the ticker of a tokenized fund issued by BlackRock, described below.

01

BUIDL in plain terms

Think of a new town built during a gold rush. Some arrivals only buy and sell land plots, hoping prices rise. Others open shops, lay roads and dig wells. When the rush cools, the town survives only if the second group did its work.

BUIDL is the second group's slogan. It says the lasting value of a blockchain comes from the things people build on it, not from trading its coins back and forth.

02

Origin and spread

The exact first use of BUIDL is not well documented. It was in common use by 2018, a year in which crypto prices fell steeply after the 2017 initial coin offering boom. During that bear market the slogan captured a shift in mood: with prices falling, many in the industry argued that the period should be used to build rather than to trade. Prominent figures, including Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, have used the word publicly, which helped spread it.

03

How the word is used

  • As encouragement. "Keep BUIDLing" is a common reply to developers announcing progress, especially during downturns.
  • As an identity. Builders contrast themselves with traders who chase meme coins or "to the moon" price talk.
  • As event branding. Hackathons, accelerators and grant programmes for decentralized applications often use the word in their names.
  • As a hiring and funding signal. Projects with live code, open source repositories and working smart contracts are said to be BUIDLing; those with only a whitepaper are not.
04

What the term says about market psychology

BUIDL reflects a long-running tension in crypto between speculation and utility. In a bull market, attention and money flow to price action; in downturns, the community's language turns toward building. Critics point out that the slogan can also be used as marketing, and that a project calling itself a builder still needs real users and sound tokenomics.

The BlackRock BUIDL fund

In March 2024 the asset manager BlackRock launched the BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund, whose ticker is BUIDL. It is a tokenized money market fund issued on the Ethereum blockchain for qualified investors. The ticker nods to the slang, but the fund is a regulated investment product and unrelated to the slogan's meaning.
