Why did the bank place a special stamp in my passport when issuing traveler’s checks?

That used to be the case, not any more. Nowadays, your passport number is written on the travelers cheques (depending on which ones you get).

The reason why your passport was stamped was to link the two, and to keep up with the local laws as well, that tells the immigration that you have X number of travelers cheques on you.
