Why aren’t PayMaya and GCash in the Philippines widely viewed as success stories despite clear benefits?

You know that is a very good question to ask. The long and the short is: Africa took over.

Smart Money / GCash, and before that the Smart network being used for remittance payments literally encompasses one of the remittance bibles (See: Remittance Bibles: The 5 must read documents.) Within the early remittance days, Smart money was a case study. Then came M-Pesa and Africa. M-Pesa was the darling of all aid organizations, all case studies, all academic endeavors for financial inclusion, etc.

Somewhere and somehow people totally forgot about Smart Money which was the true and early adopter of mobile payments and mobile based money transfers.

Smart Money / GCash have had case studies been made out of it, but not to the extent that M-Pesa has been paraded around.

For me, personally, Smart was always the beginning point.
