Why are some Square and PayPal transactions described as “offline” even though authorization occurs online?

If I were to fathom a guess, all CP (Card Present) transactions are designated as off-line transactions. Online transactions are those that are CNP (Card Not Present).

However, we are moving into a hybrid world, where the transaction is technically CP, but being done in a CNP manner.
