In addition to the great suggestions, LinkedIn is a great resource to get connected. If you have a common connection, please do use it. Don't connect just for the sake of connecting, if you are going to be using a friend as a favor to connect, have something concrete to talk about, discuss or share.
If you are going to connect direct, please do not use the standard (generic) message that LinkedIn gives. Writing 5-7 line personal message on why you want to connect goes a long way.
