Prior to Square being launch, mobile POS (mPOS) was the prevalent technology. Essentially it was a POS machine with a built mobile phone and came with a bluetooth receipt printer.

There was this French company that was one of the earliest innovators, but they quickly went out of business because of pricing pressures from China/Hong-Kong who not only copied their design, but improved upon it.
