If the ecosystem in which you have purchased the virtual currency, does not provide you with a mechanism for reverting back to your original real-life currency or to trade out via a 3rd party exchange, your best bet is to have an exchange agreement with someone who is about to invest.
For example if you have US$100 worth of Facebook credits, and you are able to find a friend, etc. who wants US$ 100 worth of FB credits, you can do a deal with him/her, "Hey, I'll give you US$ 100 worth of FB credits, provided you give me US$ 90 worth of payment into my PayPal account".
Some platforms TOS will specifically forbid such side-handing trading, but people do it out of necessity when they are tied-in/locked-in.
