The protection a crossed-cheque offers is that if stolen etc. it cannot be cashed at the bank, only deposited in the account to which it is written out to.

Non-crossed, Cash Over the Counter is possible (along with deposit into account).
Crossed Cheque, Cash Over the Counter not allowed, only direct deposit into account.
