No one knows for sure. Even the definition of Micropayments itself is debated. Is it sub $1 payments or payments between $1-$5, etc.
Micropayments also compete with SVT (small-value transfers). SVTs are payments in the $5-to-$25 range (but with more emphasis on cross-border).
It is estimated that the SVT market is going to be about US$ 1 Trillion in the next 6-7 years, when payment platforms across the world would be able to send SVTs across.
The micropayment market is very hard to guess. Tipping (in the shape of bitcoins) is also included in the Micropayments market and no one has an idea of how big that it. All the pundits agree, micropayments will be huge. Probably around the $100-$250 Billion / year mark.
Micropayment are already picking up pace in the gaming world.
