Sending relatively small value payments across the world was not possible without paying unbelievably huge transfer fees. Try to send $20 from US to India or $35 from UK to Kenya. The transfer fees will kill you, if not make it downright impossible to do the transfer.
Bitcoin has / is changing that. Small value payments (sub $100) can now easily be sent across all around the world with ease.
