2013 was the year where most people who know Ripple cited it had lost its bearing and its identity. Starting in 2014, many pundits now believe Ripple is slowly carving its niche out. One that doesn't include consumers. Ripple would be strictly B2B (Enterprise/Banks/Payment Networks).
Barring the recent Co-founders' disagreement and XRP sell-off, I believe Ripple is still on course. They have managed to onboard a decent Board and Advisors onto Ripple Labs.
They recently signed up Fidor Bank, which became the first bank in the world to implement the Ripple Protocol. [Congratulations are due there].
What remains to be seen for the rest of the year is more implementation of the Ripple protocol. In my personal opinion, Ripple would have to onboard some serious number of players in the next 18 months, to be a viable player. There is a lot of Ripple talk, but very little practical Ripple play.
Needless to say, the best insights onto Ripple can be gauged from their Blog, and not to mentioned from Welly Sculley - the Resident Ripple expert on Quora. Welly can shine more authentic light as to what Ripple is up to.
