This is not an easy question to answer. Banks literally take months to evaluate core banking software. There are literally 1,000s of feature sets.

If you have no inkling into the financial services world, the effort of your team can perhaps best be channeled by associating and contributing to the existing open-source initiatives in the banking field.

Three that comes to mind are:


Work with these three initiatives to get a solid foothold into the banking world and then you can perhaps revisit your dream of rebuilding and recoding the banking software core.

Some stale initiatives like MyBanco (See: The MyBanco Open Source Project on Open Hub) can also be looked into, there hasn't been any code submissions / contributions in well over a year, but it is worth a look.

Personally, I like the Mifos initiative. You can contribute towards this project as it seems to me this is the most mature code base out there (See: Homepage - Mifos Initiative)
