Honestly, nowadays, you need not invest in books. I learned everything without buying books, but then, that's just me.

I would highly recommend the Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures section on the BIS (Bank of International Settlements) website: CPMI - BIS. Especially look at the Red Book: various countries.

In addition, you can also go to the websites of various regulators (i.e. Central Banks) and they publish books or papers on their payment systems. It does to a very large degree the explanations of the payment infrastructure in existence very well.

Scribd is another solid source for learning. They have many presentations / papers that will aid you in understanding the payment infrastructures.

Lastly, albeit it won't qualify as books per se, YouTube is highly recommended to explain various principals.
