In addition to M-Pesa, there is EasyPaisa in Pakistan, which also allows millions of Telenor customers to buy/pay/send money using the mobile phone.
In the developing countries, the success depends on adoption, which is directly related to the distribution network of the MNOs (Mobile Network Operators) from where these phones can be charges, on-loaded or off-loaded with money.
Agnostic players are few in this mobile space, but the fever is catching on fast. The mobile payment would be made by the a subscriber of any MNO using any bank at the background. This is yet to be proven as a successful model, but give it a few years and we will know for sure.
Right now - the distribution network remains the underlying factor towards a success of a mobile payment network. The agents are not only the on/off-loading points but also are merchants who accept such mobile payments.
