What advantages does Stellar offer compared with Ripple?

I'm not sure if they have an advantage per se. In the end, a number of great products don't see the light of the day, due to the adoption element. Could Stellar be one of them? Who knows. Only time will tell.
Each crypto-currency/alternative-currency solution has its own plus/minus points. Many financial & payment institutions especially money transfer companies are eagerly looking at signs and the chatter to see which horse is going to win.
Many are betting on Bitcoin, but it has its set of challenges.
Ripple has a head-start and is implementing its solution with businesses that matter.
Stellar too will have its own sets of challenges. Does it have an advantage over Ripple? Technically? Maybe? But what will matter is how many accounts the Stellar team can win and how these conversions will further propel the adoption of the Stellar protocol in the industry.
Right now - the race is wide open.
Either way, nothing but the best to all of them. The IP ready payment protocols, are much needed.
