Gold is not a reliably way of storing anything but itself. Its long term properties are unique to the metal itself only and not applicable to anything else (like currencies, etc).

Just the last 5-Years of Gold pricing will show that it is not a stable way to keep the value of your currency:


Whilst it does offer a safe guard from total collapse, currencies today are not backed by their gold deposits anymore but more on the the strength of their currency by measuring the various input/output of their economy and the demand for their currency.
