About a day or so in general. However, most of the time the bank will let the money sit there, for it is free float, till such time that the sender calls in and asks if the wire was returned.
Each bank has its own way of dealing with this. Greedy banks will sit on it, banks with stellar service, will inform you immediately and tell you what your options are.
