No one knows for sure. Sometimes even the best of products don't go mainstream. Intended adoption just never happens. In the mid 90s to late 90s, no one thought that Netscape's Browser would be dead in 4-5 years time.
Is Ripple a SWIFT killer? Perhaps. But do you honestly think SWIFT is sitting idle and will welcome its demise? I don't think so. Ripple might just be acquired by SWIFT (wouldn't that be ironic).
The truth of the matter, banking operates as a cartel. Anyone who is sane enough and has seen the management structures would tell you this. The keyword in your question is: adoption.
