The incentive to make a new faster ACH (ACH) just doesn't lie there. $36 Trillion processed through ACH in 2012 (I may be off by a year here). Do the math on the overnight borrowing. So much revenue gets evaporated if it takes shape.
A centralized switch to have instant payments will eventually come forth, but the larger banks (collectively) would drive that. Not only drive it, but aggressively push it.
Such a system is still a few years away (at best).
