It is presumably a bluetooth enabled app, if not on bluetooth, then it will connect via the internet.
Based on proximity, the merchant app initiates the payment, which you receive on your phone (via your droplet app) and authorize the payment.
The payment token is sent to the merchant, which is then sent to the backend processor for processing giving both you and the merchant a successful authorization.
