How do I cash a cheque that is older than six months?

You cannot redeem it. The cheque as a executed financial instrumented has a shelf-life of 180 days from the date on the cheque, if you exceed it by one day, the cheque is just a piece of paper with some ink on it. Nothing more.

As the beneficiary or recipient of the cheque, there is nothing you can do about it. You cannot even get it re-endorsed (by the bank or the account holder). A new cheque has to be made if you wish to see that money.

You can however, request the issuing party to re-issue you the cheque. If they feel this money is owed to you, they can do this, others can claim they issued you a cheque and it was your duty/obligation to cash it during the anointed time-frame.
