How did Visa and Mastercard significantly expand their margins starting around 2005?

Issuance. VISA & MasterCard have aggressively been working in both emerging and developing markets. You'd be hard-pressed to find a bank that is not offering a VISA &/or MasterCard to its customers. More cards in play, more money for the card associations. Online acceptance has also contributed towards growth, but more so in the recent years.
