How did Quora manage to attract so many subject-matter experts to the platform?

As a personal observation, I've noticed that there remains sort of a fixed number (albeit growing slightly) of the number of contributors who matter. These people, day in and day out, contribute content towards Quora.
Most of my friends who joined Quora as contributors, put in 10-15-20-30-40 answers and then they go bored of it. So during their activity period, you might have seen their answers in the timeline, but after they go silent, the original committed contributors will still keep at it and hence you will start seeing these so called experts again in your time line.
There are moment of small disruption (noise for lack for a better word) when others join in, but mostly they get tired of either answering questions, or get tired in trying to find good questions to answer to.
Having more users on Quora is a great thing, because it increases the readership/viewership of the site. However, not all subscribers are contributors. That is a very important element to understand.
The number of contributors on Quora has remained steady, by steady I mean, that number (whatever it may be) is constantly contributing towards Quora and hence dominates the timelines. As a result, you see more visibility of these contributors versus anyone else.
