Bail Bondmans is a licensed industry. Each state has its own criteria and it is usually governed by the Department of Insurance in your State.
Just as an example, here are the official links for Bail Bondsman licensing information for three states:
In most States, you are to fill an application out, and then complete the required coursework from an accredited institution (they usually have a list) to get certified (i.e. licensed). Such coursework is referred to as Limited Agent Surety License, or Limited Surety License (nomenclature varies from State to State).
IL, KY, OR, WI do not have any form of a commercial bails.
It is always a good to ask the licensing authority in your State if you need to be certified for the County as well (many States have this added restriction, that you also need to be licensed for the County you practice in).
