I'd agree with Joel Yarbrough - an introduction through a friend is the best way. People would gladly make an introduction, provided they feel after the introduction, they would not be termed as an ass for doing so.
If you have something relevant to share, reach out to your network (LinkedIn is a great resource) and tell them. They will find someone relevant for you to talk to.
Its all about trust. If your common friends value your judgement (and sanity), the introduction will happen.
