For a freelance marketplace similar to Elance/O-Desk, what is an affordable alternative to a traditional escrow service?

I would have to agree with Yogesh Dhingra - Credits can make all the difference, especially if they are encashable as well trade-able within and outside your ecosystem. This is of course barring any legal requirements of owning and operating such a system.
