Dual monitors in all honesty let you segregate work based on priority. Stuff you take more seriously would be on one monitor, whilst the distractions on another. I have converted so many people to dual-monitor setups, that now it seems very difficult to work without one.

The key to having dual monitors is to decide which one would be your primary monitor. I have found that designating a monitor as a primary monitor is where work related screens are, and the secondary monitor would usually have your social media, IM, etc. would all reside.

Though many OS's come with extended virtual desktop space, its like work, you can never have enough space. Most people prefer that their screens (be it work/non-work related) be there in front of them - all the time. A dual monitor is perhaps the best way to handle it.

.....until you discover 3-monitor layouts.
