Speculative trade and reaction to anything that the media publishes regarding Bitcoins and the world of Banking & Finance (in particular financial regulators).
Right now, perhaps more trade is being done in Bitcoin trading than actual Buying/Selling of goods & services using Bitcoins.
Once this trend reverses, i.e. more good & services are bought/sold using Bitcoins and by a healthy margin compared to speculative trading, the swings will decline.
The currency in many ways is in its nascent stages as far as mainstream interest is concerned.
