Yes, it is possible to open a short-term account. There isn't a definition per se for a short-term account, the bank will assume you want to have a long relationship with them.
The only hurdle would be getting your cheque book and Debit card (to an address). Most bank will allow it to be shipped to a temporary address or be picked up in person.
There is no law that prevents you from closing your account after 6 weeks, albeit the bank won't be too happy about it!
