Can an illiterate person operating a current account issue a cheque using a thumbprint?

The requirement on the check where the signature part is to go, calls for an Autograph of the person there. So a hand-drawn scribble or one’s name written down is what is called for. Also, the amount in words is called the Legal Amount Recognition (LAR), but also be written out.
With these two considerations, anyone can help/aid the person write the cheque, but I don’t think a thumb-print would be accepted in lieu of signature.
