I think both will survive. To have one single monopolistic payments company would be unlikely (especially in Europe). If both the companies are kept on their toes (which they are) and they keep on acquiring (which they are), it would be difficult to displace them. I agree with Keith Sibson regarding PayPal, PayPal is a contender, but it still has a long way to go.
VISA seems to be more active, but then MasterCard is not behind, they are very much involved in inserting themselves in major payment networks and solutions, so at this time, extremely difficult to predict if one of them will go bust or be acquired.
