I am not sure you can open a US Bank Account sitting from Australia (any longer now).
Even if you have a US bank operating in Australia (BoA, Chase, Citibank, etc.), opening a new bank account "in" the US whilst being physically present outside of US is now no longer permissible.
HSBC will do this, with an exception, provided you have been banking with them for over 18 months.
But basically the KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements now mandated by the US PATRIOT Act requires a physical confirmation of the identification document of the person opening a bank account. If the bank account happens to be for a company, one of names mentioned on the legal documents (incorporation certificate) has to be physically present.
