Overview

Maya is the second-largest e-money wallet and one of only six licensed digital banks in the Philippines. Operated by Maya Philippines Inc. (formerly PayMaya Philippines), a subsidiary of Voyager Innovations, the platform rebranded from PayMaya to Maya in 2022 to reflect its expanded scope as a combined digital wallet and digital bank. Maya holds both a BSP-issued Electronic Money Issuer (EMI) license and a digital banking license -- capabilities beyond a pure e-wallet, including deposit-taking, PDIC-insured savings, and direct lending. Maya reported over 60 million registered users as of 2023 (unverified). It competes directly with GCash but differentiates through its digital banking capabilities and crypto trading.

History

  • 2015: PayMaya launches under Voyager Innovations (PLDT subsidiary) as a prepaid virtual/physical card
  • 2016-2017: Expands into QR merchant payments and cash-in/out; Smart Padala integrated as cash-in channel
  • 2018-2019: KKR and Tencent invest at $1B+ valuation (unverified); becomes primary GCash competitor
  • 2020: COVID-19 drives adoption; used for social amelioration payments
  • 2021: Receives one of six BSP digital banking licenses
  • 2022: PayMaya rebrands to Maya; Maya Bank launches with PDIC-insured savings; crypto trading
  • 2023: Passes 60M registered users (unverified)

How It Works

Maya is a mobile app (Android and iOS) linked to the user's phone number. Registration requires phone number and basic info; full verification requires government ID and selfie.

Cash-in: Smart Padala agent network (60,000+ touchpoints, unverified), retail partners (7-Eleven, SM, Robinsons, Bayad Center), bank transfers via InstaPay/PESONet, linked cards, international remittance partners.

Cash-out: Bank transfer via InstaPay/PESONet, Smart Padala and partner outlets, ATM via Maya Mastercard.

Wallet balances are held in trust at partner banks. Maya Bank deposits (savings product) are held directly by Maya Bank and covered by PDIC insurance up to PHP 500,000.

Market Position & Competition

Maya is the clear second-place e-wallet competing against GCash across all major product categories. While GCash leads significantly in registered users and brand awareness, Maya differentiates through:

  • Its digital banking license enabling PDIC-insured deposits and direct lending -- capabilities GCash does not possess
  • Crypto trading integrated into the wallet
  • Strong merchant payment acquisition business, particularly for SMEs
  • The Smart Padala agent network providing broad physical distribution

Other competitors include Coins.ph, ShopeePay, and new digital banks (Tonik, GoTyme, UnionDigital), though none challenge the GCash-Maya duopoly at scale.

Ownership

  • Voyager Innovations -- Parent of Maya Philippines Inc.; PLDT subsidiary
  • PLDT Inc. -- The Philippines' largest telecom (PSE: TEL; NYSE-listed). Holds the controlling stake in Voyager
  • First Pacific Company -- Hong Kong-listed conglomerate, the largest shareholder of PLDT
  • Tencent Holdings -- Significant minority investor following 2018 investment
  • KKR & Co. -- Global PE firm, invested alongside Tencent in 2018
  • IFC (World Bank Group) -- Reported investment (unverified in public filings)

Exact percentages are not consistently disclosed.

Controversies

  • Brand confusion from rebrand: The 2022 transition from PayMaya to Maya created temporary confusion among users and merchants, with reports of account migration difficulties.
  • Aggressive interest rate marketing: Maya Bank's launch featured a headline 15% savings rate that attracted significant deposits but was subsequently reduced. Some consumer advocates criticized the promotional rate as unsustainable marketing.
  • Customer service complaints: Similar to GCash, Maya users have reported account freezing, delayed transaction resolution, and difficulty reaching customer support.
