Overview

Khalti is a digital wallet and online payment platform in Nepal. Launched in 2017, it has grown to become the second-largest digital wallet in the country by registered users, positioning as a digital-first alternative in a competitive market. The platform enables P2P transfers, bill payments, goods and services purchases, remittance receipt, and merchant payments. As of 2023, Khalti reported over 8 million registered accounts (unverified). Khalti has differentiated through user experience, youth engagement, and technology-forward product development.

History

Khalti was developed by Sparrow Pay Pvt. Ltd. and launched commercially in January 2017. The platform entered a market dominated by eSewa but identified an opportunity in a more modern, app-centric experience targeting Nepal's young smartphone users. The name "Khalti" means "pocket" in Nepali. Early growth was driven by aggressive promotional campaigns, cashback offers, and integration with online services popular among younger users. Growth accelerated significantly during COVID-19 (2020-2021). Khalti has since expanded its service portfolio and merchant network and has attracted domestic and international investment.

How It Works

Khalti operates through its smartphone app (Android and iOS) and a web portal. Users register using their mobile phone number and complete KYC verification per NRB directives. Funds are loaded via linked bank accounts, connectIPS, agent cash-in, or remittances; withdrawn to bank accounts or agents. Instant wallet-to-wallet transfers use mobile numbers; merchant payments work via QR scan, online checkout integration, and direct payment.

Khalti complies with NRB's KYC and AML/CFT directives, including mandatory full KYC for active accounts. The company is subject to NRB's updated 2022-2023 PSP directives on capital and National Payment Switch integration.

Infrastructure & Network

  • Agent network: Smaller than eSewa's, concentrated in urban areas and district headquarters
  • App and web access: Primary access through the smartphone app with web portal secondary
  • Payment gateway: Khalti Payment Gateway is among Nepal's most widely integrated online solutions, used by e-commerce, ticketing, and online businesses
  • QR payments: Supports Fonepay QR standards
  • APIs and developer tools: Well-documented, contributing to adoption among online businesses

Market Position & Competition

Khalti is the second-largest digital wallet in Nepal by registered users, behind eSewa. Market positioning has focused on younger, urban, digitally literate users, with strong adoption among online merchants through the payment gateway. Key competitors include eSewa (market leader), IME Pay (leveraging remittance infrastructure), and Prabhu Pay. Bank mobile apps also compete for digital payment transactions.

Khalti's advantages include modern app experience, strong developer/merchant integration, and active user engagement through promotions. The primary challenge is narrowing the gap with eSewa's larger user base and more extensive agent network.

Ownership

Operated by Khalti Digital Wallet (formerly Sparrow Pay Pvt. Ltd.), a privately held Nepali fintech in Kathmandu. Khalti has received investment from multiple sources, but detailed shareholding is not publicly available. Media reports have indicated interest from domestic financial institutions and international investors.

Controversies

  • Competition with eSewa: Khalti faces the persistent challenge of competing against eSewa's entrenched market position, larger agent network, and brand recognition.
  • Promotional spending: Heavy reliance on cashback and promotional offers to drive acquisition has raised questions about long-term profitability.
  • Rural penetration: Khalti's user base is heavily concentrated in Kathmandu Valley and major urban centers; expanding to rural areas requires investment in agent networks and user education.
